The EICT sector: Higher education, research and the corporate sector (*EICT: Electronics, Information and Communication Technologies)
The EICT sector (Electronics and Information and Communication Technologies) is now one of the factors in any company's competitiveness, and a vector for economic growth.
Stakeholders in the teaching of the Country of Saint-Malo are naturally invests, quite as several companies of the territory which made it their speciality.

Higher education

For the past 10 years, the numbers of students in higher education in the Saint-Malo area have risen by 18%, from 1,539 students in 2000/2001 to 1,857 in 2010/2011. There are now 10 higher education institutions here.
L'IUT de Saint-Malo, l'école Nationale de la Marine Marchande de Saint-Malo, le Lycée Maupertuis, le Lycée Jacques Cartier, l'Institut de formation des soins infirmiers (IFSI), LTP La Providence, la CCI du Pays de St-Malo, le Lycée privé Les Rimains : lycéetechnique et école Marine, le Lycée hôtelier de Dinard, le lycée les Vergers de Dol de Bretagne.
To date, 57 courses for school leavers are available to the 1,857 students in the Saint-Malo area.
They are provided at the technology institute (IUT) which offers several vocationally-based undergraduate diplomas ("DUT" in Networks and Telecoms, or Telecom and Network Engineering), the national merchant navy college (Ecole Nationale de la Marine Marchande), and the Management and Business School and Accountancy College run by the Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

The University Institute of Technology

The University Institute of Technology, which has been in Saint-Malo for more than 15 years, is one of the leading players in higher education and research in our area.

Every year, more than 300 students graduate after 2 or 3 years of study in a wide range of fields such as industrial maintenance, logistics, management, finance/accountancy, or networks and telecommunications. The students are the future work force of companies in the Saint-Malo area.

The IUT provides 7 sandwich courses, which are now one of the best ways of integrating the work force. They are as popular with companies as they are with students. The Institute also provides lifelong training courses and VKE (Validation of Knowledge through Experience) qualifications for people already in the work force.


Besides, the IUT(UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY) counts following research laboratories:

  • The LTSI (Laboratoire Traitement du Signal et de l'Image, Image and signal processing laboratory) is a mixed INSERM research team. It is working on clinical procedures for the purposes of diagnosis, therapy and surgical intervention in cardiovascular disease and epilepsy.
  • The Antennae and Hyperfrequency Group within the Institut d'Electronique et Télécom de Rennes (IETR, Institute of electronics and telecommunications in Rennes) is engaged in applied research in the fields of mmicrowave electronics and the electromagnetism of antennae.
  • A URU (University Research Unit) is looking at the economics of development, the global economy and the spatial economy.
  • A unity of research on the sea transport of short distance in partnership with researchers of the university of Havre.
